Basketball Shooting Moves All Players Should Use

Basketball Shooting Moves All Players Should Use
By Sue Ellis

Making basketball hoops is the easiest and also the hardest part about basketball. You have to have the ability to shoot from every angle while defensive players are doing everything to stop you. Also, you must know how to tell when to shoot the ball and when you should pass it off to a team member. What follows are some proven techniques and strategies for perfecting your shooting skills.

One of the most basic things that you have to know about shooting the basketball is when you should take the shot and when to wait. New or self centered players will generally try to take every shot there is whenever the ball is given to them. Too many times, this should not be done. Remember, you're real goal should be to help your team, not merely be a high scoring player. But then again, a few players do not feel comfortable enough to take the shots that they should. Knowing when to shoot takes experience. However, know what is going on around you when you are learning how to do these things. Take the shot if you have the right angle to do it. But, if you can get the ball in a better position by passing it along, that should be your choice.

Another important aspect to remember is to put an arc on your shot when shooting it. This has more to do with than making the shot look good. This has to do with geometry. When shooting the ball, the straighter the shot, the less chance of making a mistake. This means you're more likely to miss. But, when the ball is shot high, the chances of it hitting rim and going where you want it to are higher. A straighter throw can score, but only if it's thrown with perfect precision. But if you shoot an arch, there is a huge possibility that it will hit the rim or backboard and bounce in the basket. As you practice shooting, then, try to get a good arc in your shots.

Hook shots are important and useful in many situations. They are really good for centers and forwards. You make a hook shot with the foot that is different from the hand and you are taking the shot with. So if you're going to shoot with your right hand, you'd pivot to the left. Do this while gripping the ball with your palm up. Then move with your left foot and release the ball over your head in a arching smooth motion. This is a good shot to make if you're being blocked by a taller opponent. It gets the ball high into the air. There are a lot of various hook shots. The way it is done will depend on your situation.

As this article says, shooting consists of a lot of things that are both physical and mental. As you get more experience, you will get a feel for what shots should be taken. When you are in the playing mode, think about your current shots and not the messed up ones that you did not make in the past. These principles will do you some good while you are practicing your shooting abilities.
