I've Discovered A Number Of Places For Regular And Intermittent Angling In The Area

I've Discovered A Number Of Places For Regular And Intermittent Angling In The Area
By Ben Murray

I am searching for more locations to go tackle dangling. A number of places have definitely presented themselves to be visited regularly and these include the canals around Kingswinford. Allowances to maggot drown here requires enrolling in the Birmingham Angling Association.

Then there is Himley House, which has a huge lake which will be fun and straightforward to fish as it just requires an inexpensive day ticket from one of the nearby fishing tackle shops. Alas the ongoing issue will be that because it is so easy and you do not require yearly memberships to anything, it will sell out quickly and I won't get a chance to unpack my fishing rods as I'm not very adept at getting up in the morning.

Casting further afield, there is the River Severn and I really fancy going to the pretty villages of Highley and Hampton Loade which are both places on the Severn Valley Railway, and the rails follow the river in other stretches as well so what could be more fun than getting out the fishing line and hunkering down. How marvellous, comfortable with my fishing tackle watching the river rush by and hearing steam whistles as the trains thunder by. I do now know what you have to do to get tickets to fish those waters yet, but there's stacks of time for research.

For variety, for lake tackle dangling, I have driven past a lake on the way into Telford many times which, like Himley is municipally owned and from looking it up, is stuffed full of carp and, strangely, catfish. Now, I have no idea what fishing tackle you'd need to set up for catfish but it would be amusing finding out. Allegedly the carp are also of a size to bend the fishing rods a lot as well. So that could be an intermittent delight.

As could some pond angling at the vineyards in Bobbington which have some fine looking ponds in which to dip the fishing rods and these too are a day ticket from the vineyard shop. The great thing about this one is that it would be quite nostalgic of the maggot drowning I did in my youth at the Cranleigh Fisheries which had a pair of sizable ponds, or tichy lakes if you prefer, where I'd regularly take my life in my hands as I piled fishing tackle bags on my back and pedal to for a nice summer Saturday or, if I could get away with it, Tuesday or Thursday afternoons after school.

One place that I am not sure about is a place called Fens Pools. This is another waterway owned by Dudley Council although unlike Himley, it does need a yearly ticket although it is very cheap. The challenge is where it is located, in Pensnett which is, how can we put it? Along the lines of the exotic. Whilst I'm not a crashing snob, not all the time anyway, I would worry that a trip would mean leaving with considerably less in the way of possessions than I had owned when I'd started. My fishing tackle may not be on the technical edge or expensive but let's face it, you could get 5 for the crappiest fishing line in a pub somewhere. So we'll revisit that when all other probabilities are exhausted.

So, all we want now is the weather to reliably get better and then I will be off on a voyage of discovery around the local area - man and fishing tackle broadening our viewpoints in the Black Country and getting to know the waterways.
