A Crucial Piece Of Kit Has Got Lost And Will Need To Be Renewed

A Crucial Piece Of Kit Has Got Lost And Will Need To Be Renewed
By Ben Murray

A quick check of my fishing rods has disclosed a lack of a quiver tip which is rather disappointing. I would of affirmed I had at least 1 stored but it appears not. When I go back to the canal side in a number of weeks, this is something else that will have to be added to the list for purchase at the fishing tackle shop.

A quiver tip is a jolly useful device that screws into the tip of the fishing rods and announces to the tackle dangler when a fish has eaten the bait, by bending considerably. It is the type of ledger signaller that works like a float by demonstrating a visible mark of doings at the hook end.

It is a fondness that I enjoy setting a float, it gives an immediate view on where the hook is in the water, and allows one to look out across the surface to keep a continuous observation on progress by giving a bob in time with a fish prodding around the bait, giving notice that the moment to pick up the fishing rods and be prepared to pounce may be close at hand when the float sinks totally.

The alternative is to utilise a weightier attachment to the line which will sink it and the hook, such as a ledger or feeder, but if employing these, one requires some type of signal and as such comes the neatness of a quiver tip as opposed to the alternative, which is to use something attached to the line at the handle end of the fishing rods such as a plastic indicator or aluminium foil which will lift up flush with the fishing rods as soon as something grabs the bait, or an electric bite alarm which will make a tone at the appropriate moment of action. But these need the eyes to be looking firmly at the fishing rods and not across the water.

This does little in the way of enhancing the view for the fisherman, part of who's raison d'tre is to enjoy the elements and natural surroundings of the riverside. So I would advise anyone minded to go to the fishing tackle shop to make for the quivers if they are not already in the tackle box. It's simple to put on and requires just one extra eye to run the line through when setting up the fishing rods.

I wonder what happened to mine, but I shall make right the shortfall when I go to the fishing tackle shop next time. And that time may not be far away as I stare out of the study which shows a plentiful supply of daylight remaining even though it is now 5:30 which would suggest that Spring and milder conditions can't be far off!
