Discover How To Grow Your Mental Prowess As A Baseball Hitter

Discover How To Grow Your Mental Prowess As A Baseball Hitter
By Dusty Mattingly

For the longest time there seemed to be a separation between the world of psychology and the sport of baseball. Only in the past few years has the idea of Sports Psychology really began to flourish. The more that I study, the more I learn that one's physical performance increasingly deals with your psychological state of mind.

Self Confidence is a by product of your Self Concept. Before you think this is bunch of psychological mumbo jumbo, I want you to hear me out. When I first wrote down what my baseball self concept was, it read as follows: Dusty is a scrappy, hard working player. Although Dusty lacks speed, he is intelligent and puts himself in a great position to succeed.

After reading through my description a few times I realized I was writing down recruiting notes about myself. If your like me, you probably would of approached the exercise the same way. The only issue is, these are just adjectives describing me and no what I think.

Here is something a little more accurate. I know Dusty is a great player and is capable of a great performance. I trust Dusty to make the right decisions on the baseball field. Very simple, but very powerful. Your self concept deals directly with your emotional perception and visualization of yourself. If you emotionally feel that you are incapable of making good decisions or are not talented enough to succeed, then you won't!

Self-concept is the innate visualizations you know to be true about your character and your ability to perform! So how does your baseball self-concept measure up? Do you trust yourself to make the right decisions on the baseball field? Do you trust that you will work hard to make it to the next level?

Whether you have a great or poor baseball self concept, I want you to perform the following exercise. I want you to describe how you feel if you were the best baseball player on earth. Then I want you to write down what you would need to do to become the best baseball player on earth? Write down everything from baseball training, to everyday life routines. Finally, I want you to ask yourself if you are taking all the necessary steps to achieving that goal. The second you start crossing those action steps off the list is the second you start building your self concept, and thus your self confidence.
