The Importance Of Batting Cages

The Importance Of Batting Cages
By Sharon Taylor

Batting cages have become very important in the sports world. They allow players to brush up on their skills and help them practice before a big game. The original goal of the system was to help players improve their swing and hitting average. They are available to any individual that loves the sport and they are becoming popular all over the world.

It was first created for professional baseball and softball players. The very first one was a simple space surrounded by a net. Protective barriers were added to protect the pitcher and the balls were restrained by the net. The netting also prevented players from having to chase down the balls and let them concentrate on hitting and improving their swing.

After the pitching machine was created, pitchers were slowly replaced. Pitchers do not have to worry about getting hit in the batting cage. The pitch and the speed coming from the machine were much more accurate. Machines appealed to people because they had more control over the ball and they could be used for not only baseball, but softball as well. They are designed to use with an age and league.

Teams or individuals may choose batting cages based on different types that are available. These types include tunnel cage, indoor, outdoor, and portable. Other aspects to consider are backstop padding, frames, and nets. The coach or individual must have a complete understanding of the different types before they build one. It is important that high quality parts are purchased to build the system because fast pitches could damage the netting, causing injury.

Automated systems are available to people of all ages who wish to improve their swing. They also help with hand eye coordination, technique, muscle memory, and bat speed. These systems are usually indoors and are coin-operated, making them ideal for players wanting extra practice. Because they are located indoors, they are available year round and during almost any kind of weather.

Since the systems can be located indoors or out, individuals and teams can practice during the winter so they will have extra practice in for the new season. Many facilities are located in the United States, including a large 55,000 square foot baseball center in North Carolina. Any cage can be changed or modified to fit specific locations.

Softball has grown in popularity over the past few years. With new interests in high school and college ball and the recent wins of an Olympic Softball Team, it has become most women's favorite sport. More women are getting scholarships to play ball than in the past because of the high interest in softball.

A trip to a local batting cage can be done individually, with a team, or with family and friends. Many are located at parks where other activities are available. Practice could be combined with a cookout or family gathering. The importance of batting cages is that they do not cost very much to go to one and they provide lots of fun with plenty of exercise.
