A Guide To Diarrhea In Toddlers

A Guide To Diarrhea In Toddlers
By Janice Alvarado

Diarrhea in toddlers can be caused by various conditions, infections and food intolerances. This condition is particularly worrying in children as their small stature makes them more susceptible to dehydration. Dehydration is extremely dangerous and steps should be taken to prevent it.

If your toddler is passing loose, unformed, watery stools more than three times in the period of a day, then you can confirm that he/she is suffering from diarrhea. If they are passing frequent normally formed stools or a loose stool on occasion, then they are not suffering from diarrhea.

There are many causes of this condition. Bacterial, viral or parasitic infections, food intolerance and certain medical conditions can cause diarrhea. Stomach flu, known as viral gastroenteritis, is a common cause of this condition in small children.

Particular food types could cause the problem. Milk as well as dairy products could be a cause. Small children who suffer from lactose intolerance could contract diarrhea if they eat any of these products. There is a hard to digest complex sugar that is present in apple, pear and cherry juice, and this might cause diarrhea. As an alternative to these juices, you could give your child grape juice.

The most important thing to do during this period is to prevent dehydration. Lost electrolytes and fluids have to be replaced. You can give your toddler special fluids in order to achieve this. These special solutions are obtainable at your pharmacy and do not need a prescription. This method of rehydration will not put a stop to the diarrhea.

You must get your child to your pediatrician if the diarrhea has continued for more than a day. In cases where vomiting is present as well, you need to see a doctor. You need to get them to a doctor immediately if there is mucus, pus or blood present in their stools. Children who have high temperatures which are above 101.4F should be taken to a medical facility immediately. If your child is listless, irritable, suffering from dry mouth or tongue, and is crying frequently, you should immediately seek medical advice.
