How you take in information is very important. You have to be in a position to distinguish the information that's helpful to you from the info that isnt. You do not want to be spending time pointlessly on taking in information that you wont be using and that is of no importance to you.

After taking in the information, you need to include it into your knowledge base. You need to make meaning of the information you have taken in. You want a way for it to all make sense to you so that you know what you are going to do with it and where youre going to use it.

Revising the information on a consistent basis is what takes it to your long term memory and keeps it there.
