Reading of Books

Reading of Books
By Janice C. Digby

Nowadays the word 'book' is more commonly used to refer to a piece of literature. They can be handwritten, printed, or electronic. The latter version is getting increasingly popular, and is called an 'e-book'. Monograph - is a term that is more often used in scholarly fields, and it denotes 'mono' - one, and 'graph' - one. In other words, this term is used to emphasize that a specific book has been written by one person as opposed to a group of authors. This term is most commonly used as a means of distinguishing them from other types of printed matter; an array, including magazines, journals, newspapers etc.

The invention of the printing machine has enabled rapid growth of literature and the number of books written by different authors. As a matter of fact the invention mechanical printing press has less to an explosion like development of printing within a matter of several decades. This in turn has created the interest in reading, which in turn, has increased the demand for printed matter. It has been estimated that there are roughly 113,000,000 unique books in the world, excluding their multiple copies. So in total there are without a doubt several billion books from different authors, genres and covering different themes.

Most often people read for entertainment purposes; when we speak of this type of reading, one cannot find a better kind of book to read than fiction. What attracts most readers in reading is the fact that one can plunge into the imaginary world of fiction. This allows you to create the entire world, to the finest details. Unlike the TV or a movie, where everything has been drawn for you, when reading, you are the one who is creating worlds and universes. This is why book reading is often called far more exciting and interesting than watching it on TV or in a movie theater.

Very often is the contemporary generation referred to as the non-reading generation -or in other words, the generation which does not like to read. While it might not be true that the younger generation is not reading at all, it is a well established fact that the younger generation is not spending as much time reading, as their parents did. Whoever makes such claims is most likely wrong than right, because some technical devices allow us to read directly off of the screen, or view an e-book, or listen to its audio version, or simply view the film which is made based on this or that book. In the end however, there is no doubt that the current generation reads no less than the previous generation did, if not more.
